Wedding rings are exorbitantly expensive and a necessity to complete wedding rituals in most societies. Some historians are of the notion that wedding rings began with the Egyptian culture about 5000 years back. Those days wedding rings were made out of natural substances such as sedges, rushes and reeds. This was a popular growth alongside river Papyrus. These plants were twisted and braided into finger rings and also other ornaments worn by women in those days. This circular ornament has been a symbol of eternity across cultures and civilizations. The circular shape implies a bond with no beginning or end. It goes on forever. The hollow center is not merely a void or a blank space. It is an opening or a gateway to opportun

ities. Presenting this valuable symbol to a woman signifies immortal love and undying passion.
Though these wedding bands meant eternal love, their constituent materials were not sturdy enough to last long. Thus, after the wedding ceremony would be over, there would be alternative substitutes for the naturally made rings. The new rings would be made out of leather, ivory or bone. This tradition was then taken up by the Romans. But the symbolic identity of the ring changed in the Roman regime. Instead of representing immortal love, it symbolized ownership for life. When a Roman man would present a wedding band to a Roman woman, it would imply that he is claiming ownership over her. Roman betrothal rings were composed of iron, which signified permanence and strength. Engraving of rings began with the Romans.
Engraving tradition incorporated exaggerate designs such as two hands, doves ot lyres. However, this blatant expression of love was despised by the Church. Around 13th century, betrothal rings were simplified to plain wedding bands made from gold or silver. Romans began the convention of wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand – which is also known as the ring finger. This is owing to the fact that the Vein of Love in this finger connects it directly to the heart. Though further scientific research proved it to be wrong, but people have been abiding by this convention ever since. These days, different types of rings are available in the world.
