Pearl Jewellery: Origin and History of the Beautiful Mollusk

One of the most beautiful creations of nature, pearls are hard objects which are produced within the shells of clams and are made up for crystalline calcium carbonate. Perfect to the naked eye, each pearl consists of invisible concentric layers and are rounded and smooth. And because of such perfection, the word ‘pearl’ has been taken to denote the best and the purest.Pearl Jewellery
Types of Pearls
Pearls are of different types. The natural pearl is very rare and most of them have already been harvested, primarily from the Gulf of Persia. Because of the scarcity, natural pearls cost a bomb. Then there is the cultured pearl that is grown in pearl farms which get the mother of pearl bead nucleus to implant the molluscs, return them to the water and then care for them. This is a hit and miss procedure but one that is widely practised. There are saltwater pearls as well which range from 2 mm and 10 mm and freshwater pearls which mostly don’t have a bead nucleus. Finally, there is the imitation pearl which is usually a coated glass bead and is cheap.
Uses of Pearls
Pearls are renewable resources which are primarily used for making beautiful jewellery. They are also used for making complex furniture and other decorative things around the house. The clam shell of the oyster also comes with a lot of health benefits.
Pearls in Culture & Religion
In Hinduism, the Garuda Purana describes the Nine Pearls which have medicinal properties in powder form. Kinds wore necklaces made of rubies which have been passed down from generation to generation. There was also a tradition of presenting a new pearl during a wedding. In Hebrew Scriptures, pearls are considered to be the stone on the Hoshen that represented the tribe of Zebulun, though it is a disputed legend. In Islamic scriptures, those in jannat aka heaven will be adorned with pearls and there are references to pearls in the New Testament as well.
